Anonymous Annoying Internet Posts a Federal Offense

Yup you read that right, and its true. Tucked away deep in the heart of the theoretically noble Violence Against Women and Department of Justice Reauthorization Act is the following:

"Whoever...utilizes any device or software that can be used to originate telecommunications or other types of communications that are transmitted, in whole or in part, by the Internet... without disclosing his identity and with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten, or harass any person...who receives the communications...shall be fined under title 18 or imprisoned not more than two years, or both."

Read that again, and again. Annoy someone on line and you could face TWO YEARS in prison.

What's that piece of toilet paper in the National Archives called again? Oh yeah, the Constitution.

By the way we have Republican Senator to thank for this pathetic waste of legislation. It is inconceivable to me that this legislation would withstand any judicial review, but don't let that stop your efforts Arlen. Gotta pretend to earn that pay one way or another.

There’s no way to rule innocent men. The only power government has is the power to crack down on criminals. When there aren’t enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.
