Homeland Security. The Patriot Act. The prisoners in Gitmo. The RealID Act. Tiny little chunks of our liberty taken away to "protect" us from the terrorists of the world. But you see, these extremists have ZERO hope of EXTERNALLY conquering the US. The people of this country, from all walks of life and religions, are far too proud, and too well armed, to allow such a thing to happen. Neither the Soviets at their height of power nor the Chinese now could pull off a conventional invasion and occupation, they could only hope to wipe us out with their massive nuclear arsonals. Any occupying force in the US would meet with a resistance so massive the chumps like Zarquawi in Iraq would look like boy scouts, evil boyscouts more to the point, because our resistance would choose military, not civilian, targets.
The essential goals and tactics of terrorism are to use acts of extreme violence to effect fundamental change in a society's lifestyle and structure by creating terror within that society. Every time we the people hand over a liberty that we enjoy in order to protect ourselves we are handing the terrorists another victory. If we remain brave they cannot beat us externally, they can only bloody our noses. However, if we continue to violate our own principles by allowing increased intrusions into individual liberty by our government then we continue to hand our enemy internal victories, one after the other.
"They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." - Ben Franklin
"The only thing we have to fear is fear itself." - FDR
How ironic that a quote from FDR, the creator of the welfare state, is so relevant in discussing the necessity of limiting governmental power today. Then again, I can't remember the last politician on either side of the republicrat party who has made any attempt to create bravery amongst the populace. It is far far easier to grab power from a frightened populace than from a brave populace...
"To those who scare peace loving people with phantoms of lost liberty, my message is this: your tactics aid terrorists for they erode our national unity and diminish our resolve." - John Ashcroft
"There ought to be limits to freedom." George W. Bush - May 1999
"What luck for rulers that men do not think." - Adolf Hitler
